The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Erode Detachment, has registered a case against an official of the Water Resources Department and a quarry owner on charges of attempting to receive and offer a bribe on October 15.
Acting on a tip-off that cash was being distributed to officials by contractors, a five-member DVAC team led by Inspector M. Rekha raided the office of the Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, Lower Bhavani Basin Division, at Konavaikal in Erode on Wednesday evening.
During the check, the team found Kandasamy (61), a quarry owner from Bhavani, in possession of ₹3.50 lakh, which he was about to hand over to Kumaresan (51), Assistant Executive Engineer of the Karur sub-division. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the money was intended as a Deepavali gift for the official.
The cash was seized on the spot, and after inquiry, a case was registered against Kandasamy for attempting to offer a bribe and against Kumaresan for attempting to receive a bribe. The seized money was later deposited in the government treasury.
The division’s headquarters has jurisdiction over the LBP canal in Erode, Karur, and Tiruppur districts, and Kumaresan is in charge of operations in Karur district, officials said.
