Centre approves urban forest project at Veermalakunnu in Kasaragod

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEFs) has approved an urban forest project on 38 acres of land under the Forest department at Veermalakunnu, a scenic hilltop in Kasaragod district, to enhance its tourism potential.

The Veermalakunnu tourism project will be developed in two parts. While the Tourism department is working on over nine acres handed over to it under the Kasaragod Development Package, the Forest department will implement ecotourism initiatives on its land through Forest Conservation Committees.

Divisional Forest Officer K. Ashraf said 14 hectares at Veermalakunnu was under the department’s jurisdiction and it would be developed adhering to the MoEFs guidelines. “The government has allocated ₹4 lakh a hectare. We have proposed to develop 14 hectares and ₹36 lakh has been approved as the first instalment,” he said.

Mr. Ashraf said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and a working plan were being prepared. Once implemented, Veermalakunnu is expected to become an ecotourism destination showcasing the laterite landscape and native biodiversity. As part of the project, the acacia trees in the area will be replaced with native and fruit-bearing species. Walkways and a watchtower will be set up. However, large-scale construction will not permitted. “The project will transform the hill into a beautiful destination for both local residents and tourists,” Mr. Ashraf said.

The hill is famous for its natural beauty. Its slopes turn a carpet of flowers in August and September with the blooming of innumerable plants. From its vantage points, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Neeleswaram river and its iconic bridge.

The spot provides opportunities for family outings, light trekking and rappelling, making it a destination for both leisure and adventure.
