The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has extended the deadline for the licensing of pet dogs and cats in the 15 zones of the city, from November 23 to December 7, 2025.
According to a press release, as many as 65,422 pet animals have been registered online by residents in the city so far, while 24,477 of them have received licences after the administration of the anti-rabies vaccine and microchipping of the animals.
After demands from residents to extend the deadline, the civic body on Friday (November 21) announced the extension by two weeks.
The initiative to carry out free microchipping of dogs at the Chennai Corporation veterinary clinics and the provision of free anti-rabies vaccination and pet dog licences have been taken to improve the safety of residents in all neighbourhoods.
Private veterinary clinics registered with the Tamil Nadu State Veterinary Council and clinics listed online by the GCC have also been permitted to carry out the microchipping of dogs and provide services such as the anti-rabies vaccination.
Pet owners will get a pet licence for dogs from the Chennai Corporation only after microchipping the animal and administering the anti-rabies vaccine. However, cats will receive a pet licence online after the provision of the anti-rabies vaccination, without microchipping.
Mayor R. Priya had launched the online system for pet licensing on October 3, 2025, to monitor the annual anti-rabies vaccination of the animals. The licence of cats and dogs will automatically expire after the completion of one year of administering the anti-rabies vaccine. Besides preventing rabies, the online system of pet licensing, with the mandatory microchipping of dogs, is expected to prevent pet abandonment, officials said.

The provision of free microchipping and vaccination of pets are available at the veterinary clinics in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Pulianthope, Lloyds Colony, Nungambakkam, Kannammapet, and Meenambakkam from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on all days of the week, including Sundays, the release said.
