A 70-year-old woman is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Vadapalani after being bitten by stray dogs near her house in Saidapet on Thursday (October 23, 2025) evening. She also suffered injuries while trying to escape the dogs.
A senior official of the city police said Bala Soundarya, a resident of Rangarajapuram, was returning home via Sri Nagar Colony of Saidapet when she was chased by a pack of four or five stray dogs. While trying to escape them, she fell and suffered a hip fracture, and was also bitten by the dogs. Locals in the area rescued the woman and rushed her to a private hospital in Vadapalani.
The Kotturpuram police have registered a case and have begun an investigation.
Officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) in Adyar Zone (XIII) said they had not received any complaint or communication from the police or the public regarding the stray dog bite incident. “On average, we receive around 20 complaints a day from residents across the zone, but veterinary officials are able to attend to only about 12 to 15 of them. The remaining complaints are carried over to the next day. The veterinary official will check complaints regarding aggressive dogs in the area where the incident allegedly took place,” an official said.
Since September, five dog catchers and one dog-catching vehicle have captured 130 dogs for Animal Birth Control (ABC) treatment and general health checks, the official said. “The newly deployed vehicles were meant only for releasing dogs that had undergone ABC surgery and could not be used for catching,” the official added. The authorities said the dogs involved in the biting incident would be identified and captured for observation.
