City hospital airlifts donor heart from Thanjavur to Chennai to save life of 33-year-old

MGM Healthcare successfully airlifted a donor heart from Thanjavur to Chennai, saving the life of a 33-year-old patient from Maharashtra, suffering from end-stage heart failure.

A press release said the heart was retrieved from a 19-year-old man who was declared brain-dead following a road accident at Thanjavur Government Hospital on the morning of December 26.

After obtaining consent from his family, his heart and small intestine were donated for transplantation. To ensure rapid transport, the team chose to use a special chopper to fly the organ from Thanjavur to D.G. Vaishnav College in Aminjikarai. A green corridor was created from there to the hospital by the police.
