Heavy rainfall will continue over the coastal belt, starting from Cuddalore and adjoining districts till November 25.
As for Chennai, the Meteorological department has forecast that one or two spells of light/moderate rainfall will occur on Thursday.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), a new low pressure area is likely to form over Southeast Bay of Bengal around Saturday and is expected to gather strength as a depression by November 24. The system may further move west-northwestwards and intensify further over southwest Bay of Bengal by November 26.
The RMC is monitoring the weather system for its prospects of intensifying into a deep depression or a cyclone.
This will sustain intense downpour in various parts of the State. During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, torrential rain pounded various southern districts. Oothu in Tirunelveli district recorded the heaviest rainfall of 23 cm in the State, followed by Nalumukku in Tirunelveli district, with 21 cm.
On Thursday, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai have chances of heavy rainfall. Intense showers are likely to pick up from November 21 and seven districts between the stretch of Cuddalore and Kanniyakumari may receive heavy rainfall.
Once the new weather system forms in Bay of Bengal, most parts of the coastal region will begin to receive fairly widespread rainfall and there is high prospect of 11 coastal and adjoining districts to get heavy rainfall on November 22.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted a similar weather pattern to persist in the State till November 25.
