The Tamil Nadu Vivasayeegal Sangam has urged the Coimbatore Corporation to convene a consultative meeting with farmers before proceeding with the Noyyal rejuvenation project worth ₹200 crore.
Association secretary V.R. Palanisamy said in a press release that the project would directly affect farmers who depended on the river for irrigation and hence, their participation was essential in the project’s planning and implementation. “Farmers have long been advocating for the rejuvenation of River Noyyal. It will be appropriate for the Corporation to share its plans with us and to consider our inputs, which can help address long-standing issues and ensure sustainable management of the river,” he said.
A senior Corporation official said that a meeting was held recently with residents living along the river, resident welfare associations and officials from the departments concerned. “We are also considering inviting farmers living near the Noyyal to share their opinions and to explain the scope of the project to them,” the official added.
As part of preparatory works, the Corporation had completed boundary marking of the Noyyal, removed encroachments, and installed boundary stones along an 18.5-km stretch within city limits. “We plan to construct a 4.5-km road along the river from Athupalam to Nanjundapuram Road, including cycle tracks, parks, and other improvement works. For the full 18.5-km stretch, we are planning intersections and diversions to direct sewage to treatment plants at Ukkadam and Nanjundapuram and then return treated water to the river, and to establish two new STPs on the riverbanks. The proposal will be scrutinised within two weeks and submitted for fund approval,” the official said.
