Coimbatore Corporation has withdrawn its proposal to increase monthly water supply and underground drainage (UGD) charges following opposition from councillors across parties. The proposal, tabled during the Council meeting on June 26 this year, included a provision for an annual 3% escalation and was to be calculated based on the built-up area of residential buildings.
At the Council meeting held on Thursday, Mayor K. Ranganayaki moved a resolution to revoke the earlier decision. Councillors welcomed the withdrawal of the proposed charges — a move they had opposed since the issue came to light, calling it unfair.
Other proposals passed during the June meeting were also cancelled. These included the introduction of a ₹75 user fee for accessing indoor sports complexes maintained by the Corporation. Another withdrawn resolution related to the handling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The Corporation had identified four designated locations to decentralise collection and reduce unauthorised dumping. However, this proposal too, which had faced opposition, was rolled back.
Also withdrawn was a resolution related to granting revised administrative sanction for the 24×7 drinking water supply project, which involved a cost revision.
Councillors said that any revision in water and UGD charges would burden the public and should not be implemented under the current circumstances.
