Coimbatore gang-rape: Trial commences at Mahila Court; counsels appointed for accused

The trial for the gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student by three persons near Coimbatore airport in November last year commenced at the Mahila Court here on MondayFebruary 2.

The three accused in the case — T. Karuppasamy, alias Satheesh, 30; his brother T. Kaleeswaran, alias Karthik, 21; and their distant relative M. Guna, alias Thavasi, 20, all from Madurai — were produced before trial court judge V. Sundararaj. B. Jisha is the Special Public Prosecutor for the case.

Two lawyers have been provided to the three accused through the District Legal Services Authority as they did not have counsel.

Court sources said the survivor’s male friend, who is the complainant, a victim of assault by the accused and also a witness in the case, was examined first by the prosecution and defence counsel.

The survivor was examined after him and the first day’s proceedings went on for several hours till evening.

During the last hearing on January 27, the court framed charges against the three accused and read out the same to them. The accused pleaded not guilty of the charges against them.

They have been arraigned for offences under Sections 127(2), 64(2)(m), 111(2)(b), 111(4), 324(4), 140(3), 309(6), 311, 70(1), 140(4), 115(2), 74 and 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

As per the prosecution case, the three men gang-raped the college student in a deserted area near Brindhavan Nagar, close to the Coimbatore airport, on the intervening night of November 2 and 3, 2025.

The three accused had approached the survivor and her male friend, when they were engaged in a conversation inside a car on the vacant plot of land around 10.50 p.m. on November 2.

They abducted the woman after assaulting the man, and took her to a deserted area behind a college campus, where they raped her.

The police arrested the trio, after shooting them in their legs, on the night of November 3.

As per the prosecution case, the three men gang-raped the college student at a deserted area near Brindhavan Nagar, close to the Coimbatore airport, on the intervening night of November 2 and 3, 2025.

The three accused had approached the survivor and her male friend, when they were sitting inside a car and chatting on a vacant plot of land around 10.50 p.m. on November 2. They abducted the woman, after assaulting the man, and took her to a deserted area behind a college campus, where they raped her.

The police arrested the trio, after shooting them in their legs, on the night of November 3.
