Congress alleges government of increasingly restricting citizens’ access to RTI in Tripura

Tripura Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha on Sunday accused the State and Union governments of violating the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which was implemented on October 12, 2005, at the “initiative of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi”.

Mr. Saha told presspersons that the BJP government has increasingly restricted citizens’ access to information over the past 11 years and also undermined the effectiveness of Right to Information Commissions at the State level. He highlighted that over 2,05,000 RTI applications have been submitted nationwide, with approximately 33,000 poised for legal action, but there is a systematic ploy to obstruct them.

He alleged that both the Central and State governments are depriving the citizens of their rights by delaying the response to RTI requests. He further mentioned incidents wherein RTI applicants faced attacks.

He urged the people to voice their discontent against the government’s infringement on the RTI Act and its legality.
