Congress leader criticises BJP leaders for comments on hate speech Bill

Congress leader H.C. Yogeesh has criticised BJP leaders for their stance on the hate speech Bill passed by both houses of the Karnataka Assembly.

In a press conference at Shivamogga on December 30, Mr. Yogeesh opined that BJP leaders are worried about the implications of the Bill because they are known for making hate speeches. S.N. Channabasappa, Shivamogga BJP MLA, attracted a criminal case in 2015 for making a comment targeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Similarly, former Minister K.S. Eshwarappa had been facing cases for making provocative statements.

“Many BJP leaders have urged the Governor not to give assent to the Bill passed by the legislature. Their stance clearly shows that they do not want harmony in the State. However, the State government has brought this Bill with the objective of stopping hate crimes and hate speeches, which could lead to disturbing law and order,” said Mr. Yogeesh, who contested the Shivamogga Assembly polls on a Congress ticket in 2023.

He further demanded that BJP leaders speak on issues concerning the development of the State and the welfare of deprived sections.
