A couple who were collecting money for Deepavali chit fund and allegedly cheated the public were arrested in the district on Wednesday (November 12, 2025).
The arrested were identified as Subramani (56) of Odapalli Agraharam near Pallipalayam and his wife, Palaniammal (54). They had started to collect Deepavali chit funds from local residents in October last year.
As per their promise, the chit fund amount should have been returned last month. But when the people who had invested in the chit enquired, the couple did not answer properly. Following this, the people lodged a complaint with the District Crime Branch (DCB).
The police registered a case and found the couple allegedly cheated the public to the tune of ₹52.31 lakh. The police on Wednesday arrested the couple and are investigating further.
