CPI(M) councillors oppose GCC’s move to levy fee on property transfer filings

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council approved a resolution to levy a fee for filing returns regarding the transfer of property ownership. Under the new sub-rule, the filing must be accompanied by a fee of ₹500 for residential buildings and ₹1,000 for non-residential buildings. This faced strong opposition from Communist party councillors during the session.

A. Priyadharshini of the CPI(M), representing Ward 98, and M. Saraswathi of Ward 123 (Teynampet), condemned the move. Despite the dissent, Mayor R. Priya declared that the resolution was passed.
