Dante Core Arrested Days Before Ole Miss’ Sugar Bowl Game vs. Georgia

University of Mississippi defensive back Dante Core was arrested following a traffic stop on Friday, December 26, six days before the Rebels’ upcoming game against the University of Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

Police told Memphis’ Action News 5 in a story published Monday, December 29 that Core was traveling at more than 110 miles per hour without a visible license plate when he was pulled over in Andalusia, Alabama. After smelling marijuana, officers searched his car and charged him with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The freshman was released on $1,000 bond later that day and was cooperative with law enforcement, according to Mid Bay News.

Core has not appeared in a game this season and the university has not yet commented on his arrest.

This will be a different Ole Miss team than the one that faced Georgia more than two months ago. New head coach Pete Golding is leading the team now after Lane Kiffin’s sudden and controversial departure to LSU.

“Oxford is home, and it’s an incredible honor to lead one of the nation’s premier programs, and I can’t wait to get to work immediately and prepare this team to win a national championship,” Golding, 41, said in a statement when he was hired.

He continued, “Our mission moving forward is clear: we will play with toughness, discipline and relentless effort in everything we do. We will recruit at the highest level, develop our players on and off the field, and compete every single day to bring championships to Oxford. Most importantly, we will represent this university with class and integrity.”

Golding and his team already have one playoff win under their belts, having defeated Tulane University, 41-10, in the first round.

“Obviously an exciting night for our program, for our fans, and more importantly for our players,” Golding told the media after the game. “They’ve been through a lot over these last couple of weeks, and it was good just to get back on the grass, at home in front of their fans and get out there and play football, a game that they love.”

He added, “Super excited for our program. More importantly, for our players to be able to play again. That was the message to them throughout it. ‘You’re playing to play again. Don’t let this season end.’”

Ole Miss and Georgia will face off on New Year’s Day with an 8 p.m. ET kick-off in New Orleans, Louisiana.
