The Department of Posts has decided to explore the use of drone technology for transport of postal bags from post office to branch post office in select routes.
In a communication dated December 2, 2025 to the circle heads, the Department said use of the drones was tried out in Himachal Pradesh and north eastern circle and it was found to be economical, environment friendly, time saving, and offers facility to track transmission of the bags.
Hence, it plans to float tenders for conveyance of postal bags using drones on select routes from post office to branch post offices in each circle. It has asked the circle heads to identify the routes by December 15. The selected post office should be mapped with minimum 10 branch post offices, it said.
