Thinker and former Secretary G.C. Tallur has called upon the younger generation to develop the habit of reading widely and gaining deeper knowledge about civilisation and culture.
Speaking at the valedictory session of a two-day international conference in Hubballi, Mr. Tallur said that the theme of the conference was very meaningful and that every word in its title deserved serious study.
He explained that professional knowledge is called as Apara Vidya which mainly helps people earn a living and is limited to one lifetime. To truly understand civilisation, he said that people must also pursue Para Vidya, a higher form of knowledge connected to culture and philosophy.
He suggested that once people start earning, they should also spend time learning and understanding this higher knowledge.
Mr. Tallur also encouraged young people to build personal home libraries, spend money on good books and develop the habit of reading beyond their school and college syllabus.
Referring to the theme of civilisation literature, he said that it belongs to the field of Para Vidya. He welcomed the organisation of such conferences and expressed the hope that people will approach the subject with curiosity and seriousness rather than treating it as a dry academic discussion.
Principal of Government Grade College, Dharwad, Guru Nath K. Badiger said that civilisation literature plays an important role because it helps one understand how the human mind works.
He added that this tradition should continue and that young minds should be encouraged to do research in this field, as it is people’s responsibility to expand and rewrite research.
President of Dharwad Katte Basavaraj Donur said that more than 30 lectures were delivered during the conference and that the event was a success. He explained that the aim of the conference was to help people understand the values and ethos of civilisation.
Quoting from the famous line “The unexamined life is not worth living”, he said that people must reflect on their own selves to live a meaningful life.
Many eminent personalities, delegates and students were present.
