The down ramps constructed as part of the G.D. Naidu flyover in Coimbatore city are not according to the norms of the Indian Road Congress and pose risks to motorists, said K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause.
Vehicles coming down the flyover, using the ramps, join the traffic on the Avinashi Road and the service road. There should be visibility of the vehicles coming to the service road, main road and the ramp and they should proceed on the respective lanes for at least 60 metres before they join to form the traffic on the main road. However, this 60 metres lane segregation is not available now. The police are keeping temporary structures to avoid accidents, he pointed out.
The same issue was raised for the Periyanaikenpalayam flyover and now rectification works are taken up and action is taken against the officials.
The Avinashi road down ramps pose risks to motorists as unlike the Periyanaikenpalayam flyover, the ramps have vehicles coming on the ground-level road on either side. The vehicles need space to join the main traffic and grave accidents can happen anytime if the fault is not rectified, he said.
However, officials of the Highways Department said there is no pending work in the down ramps and the ramps are according to the norms. There are rumble strips to slow down the vehicles coming down the ramps, they added.
