The Chennai police have arrested eight persons, including a history-sheeter, in connection with the murder of another history-sheeter, who was stabbed to death in Tiruvottiyur earlier this week.

The deceased, Sathya, 27, was a resident of Kannagi Nagar, Thoraipakkam, and worked as a load worker. On Wednesday (December 10, 2025) night, Sathya was travelling with his mother Malar, 47, from Ennore to Kannagi Nagar in an autorickshaw via Thiruvottiyur, Beach Road, and Thiruchinankuppam. On noticing that a group of people were tailing the vehicle, Sathya got out of the auto and began running in the Thiruchinankuppam area. According to the police, eight persons chased him and attacked him with knives, killing him on the spot. They then fled the scene.

Based on a complaint lodged by Ms. Malar, the police recovered Sathya’s body from the scene and sent it to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The first accused, Vicky alias Vikkirai, 33, of Ennore, was arrested on Thursday (December 11, 2025) night near New Wharf on Ennore Express Road. According to the police, he attempted to attack a police official while being apprehended, following which the latter shot him in the leg in self-defence.

Subsequently, the remaining accused — Ashok alias Ashok Prasad, 21, Surya, 19, Selva alias Selvaraj, 20, Kuralarasan, 21, Subash, 25, Vadivel, 23, and Vinoth alias Moonu Vinoth, 24, all residents of Ennore — were arrested on Friday (December 12, 2025) near the Popular Weigh Bridge in Ennore. Three knives used in the crime were seized from them.

Prior enmity

The police found that in 2023, during a temple festival at the Ennore Tsunami Housing area, Sathya, along with his friends, had allegedly murdered a person named ‘Poi’ Vijay. A case was registered at the Ennore police station in connection with that incident, and the trial is under way. Sathya was out on bail in the case, the police said, adding that he was murdered by ‘Poi’ Vijay’s friends in retaliation.

It was also found during the investigation that one of the accused, Subash, is a history-sheeter and has seven criminal cases against him at the Ennore police station. Ashok has one prior criminal case against him; Vinoth, three; and Vicky, as many as 16 criminal cases, according to the police.
