The Coimbatore City and District Police on Friday said a quarrel between a man and his wife in a moving car was misconstrued to be a case of “abduction” leading to a scare. The incident took place at Irugur on Thursday night.
According to the police, several television channels and online platforms reported that an unidentified woman was abducted in a car at Power House near Irugur, Coimbatore district, causing public alarm.
The police claimed it was a quarrel between a 51-year-old man and his wife aged 48 from a residential area in Ondipudur. The couple sat on the front seats and their 15-year-old son sat behind. The family, according to the police, went to Sulur to buy provisions late on Thursday. The couple had a quarrel while returning, following which the car was stopped on the side of a road. The woman was reportedly physically restrained by her husband. The police said this incident was misinterpreted and circulated as the abduction of a woman.
The police traced the car of the family on Friday evening and recorded a video statement of the woman, who said it was a family quarrel. A passer-by woman had earlier reported to the police that she suspected it to be a case of abduction.
