Farmers of Madurai district complained about medical waste from Kerala being dumped in the district, at the farmers grievance redressal meeting held at the Collectorate here on Friday.
The farmers told Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar, who presided over the event, that medical waste from Kerala was being dumped near the waterbodies in Tirumangalam. They urged the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent this and ensure that there was monitoring. They complained that the waterbodies in the region were getting polluted.
The Collector instructed the authorities to lodge a police complaint and take necessary action against those involved. The vehicles used in the offence should be seized, he said. The authorities said that steps were being taken to clear the medical waste.
The farmers urged the authorities to take steps for dredging the supply channels and irrigation channels, particularly in Melur region. They said water was released to the region for irrigation without dredging. Dredging should be carried out so that water would reache all the agricultural areas, they said. The authorities said that the work had been carried out.
A section of maize farmers complained that they did not receive compensation for crop loss. They urged the authorities to pay compensation for crop loss. The Collector assured the farmers that the issue would be looked into and steps taken after the funds were released.
The farmers thanked the State government and Madurai district administration for timely release of water from the Vaigai dam for irrigation. The water would be used for single crop cultivation in Madurai, Sivaganga and Dindigul districts.
