Farmers oppose move to set up SIPCOT estate on land belonging to livestock research farm

The Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam has opposed the move to set up the Small Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu’s (SIPCOT) industrial estate on the land belonging to the Livestock Research Farm at Naduvur in Orathanadu taluk of Thanjavur district.

In a memorandum addressed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and submitted through Thanjavur District Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam, association general secretary P.R. Pandian said that over 500 head of cattle, all of them country breed, were being reared at the Naduvur farm, which has been attached to the Government Veterinary College, Orathanadu. It was absurd and condemnable to promote rearing of cattle among farmers on one hand and to allot large chunks of land belonging to the livestock farms to promote industrial activities on the other hand.

A similar move to transfer land belonging to the livestock farm at Korkai in Tiruvarur district, where the native breed – Umbalacheri cattle — was being preserved, to SIPCOT last year was dropped after strong opposition from farmers, the memorandum added.

The association urged the State government to desist from acquiring or transferring the livestock farm lands or agriculture research institute land for promoting other development activities in order to save farmers.
