Several patients were safely evacuated on time following a fire outbreak at Baby Memorial hospital in Kozhikode city in Kerala on Saturday (November 29, 2025) morning. The blaze was first spotted on the ninth floor of the hospital building around 9.30 a.m.
Fire and Rescue Services sources said the fire was caused by a suspected short circuit in the AC plant on the affected floor where some installation works were under way. The blaze was brought under control within an hour, they said.
Hospital authorities said no patients sustained injuries in the incident as timely evacuation was done following the safety instructions of the rescue squads and security personnel. Fire and Rescue Services units from various city stations also reached the spot for assistance.
“We managed the situation very safely, sticking to the scientific evacuation plan and safety protocols. The timely response of the hospital staff to the emergency situation also helped a lot,” said a doctor at the hospital.
He said precautions had been taken on time to avert the spread of fire to the other floors and patients under critical care.
Safety audit soon
Rescue squad members said a thorough safety audit would be conducted in the entire hospital building in the wake of the latest incident.
Officials from the Electrical Inspectorate would also carry out their checks to ascertain the cause behind the fire outbreak, they said.
