Residents living near the corporation garbage yard at Ramaiyanpatti on the city outskirts suffered a lot after fire broke out in the accumulated waste on Wednesday evening.
The waste collected in areas under Tirunelveli Corporation is being dumped in the garbage yard at Ramaiyanpatti while a portion of the degradable waste is converted into manure in the micro compost centres. When fire broke out in the garbage dumped at the Ramaiyanpatti yard on Wednesday evening, the residents, who encounter this menace every summer, underwent the trauma once again.
Fire tenders from Palayamkottai and Pettai were pressed into service to douse the flame even as medical teams were deployed in the areas engulfed by thick smoke to treat people suffering from breathing problems.
District Collector R. Sukumar, who visited the spot, hoped that the fire would be brought under control by Thursday morning.
