New Delhi
Three major fire incidents and nearly 400 emergency calls, the highest in 14 years, marked this year’s Deepavali in the Capital, according to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS).
Between October 20 and 6 a.m. on October 21, the DFS received 399 calls, including 358 fire-related emergencies, a sharp rise from 318 last year. Of these, 122 incidents were directly linked to firecrackers, an official said.
Among the three major fires, the most severe one broke out at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in north-west Delhi on Tuesday. Two adjoining godowns storing automobile repair tools caught fire around 1.25 a.m. “The godowns, spread over 1,000 square metres with a basement, ground, and first floor, were engulfed in flames,” a DFS official said.
Twenty-five fire tenders and 14 relief units were deployed to douse the blaze. However, no casualties were reported, officials said.
