With Deepavali round the corner, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel in the Tiruchi region have embarked on the task of creating awareness among students and the general public on the safe ways of celebrating the festival of lights.
Split into multiple teams, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel launched their campaign on October 13 by visiting various educational institutions and public spots in Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukottai, and Ariyalur districts sensitising the students and the general public to safe ways of bursting crackers. The Deepavali festival falls on October 20.
The awareness campaigns were being carried out at the respective fire station by the field-level personnel attached to them. A propaganda van equipped with video and audio systems was being deployed in Tiruchi to educate people on celebrating the festival safely, a senior official of the department said.
As part of the ongoing campaign, the teams at the station level have been chalking out programmes daily visiting various schools and colleges and circulating pamphlets containing do’s and don’ts while bursting crackers.
Students and the general public have been advised not to burst crackers near hospitals and power transformers and adhere to the government time restrictions. They have been advised to desist from using bottles, tins or plastic containers for firing rockets besides being asked not to use them near thatched houses or haystacks.
Public places where people converge in large numbers such as bus stands and railway stations besides fuel outlets are being covered by the firefighters in the region to drive home safety messages to the general public. Pamphlets containing a host of awareness messages were being circulated to the public at these places as part of the campaigns which would go on till October 19, said another official.
Firefighters at the respective station would be in a state of readiness to act swiftly to deal with any emergency situation on the eve and on the day of the festival on receipt of a call, said the official.
