The Mambalam police arrested three adults and two juveniles on charges of luring a private company employee through the Grindr app, assaulting him, and robbing him of money.
Police said N. Hariharan, 28, a native of Dharmapuri district, is currently residing in Saidapet and working in a private firm. On January 23, he was speaking to a person named Saravanan whom he had met through the Grindr app when the latter shared a location and asked him to come to Kannammapet, T. Nagar.
Police said when Hariharan reached the spot, two persons took him to a house and confined him. Three others were already present in the house. These five persons allegedly assaulted Hariharan with an iron rod and robbed him of a three-gram gold ring, a silver chain, a bracelet, and two mobile phones. They also contacted one of Hariharan’s colleagues and received ₹5,000 through an online QR code transaction.
Later, the accused took Hariharan on a two-wheeler to a nearby ATM centre and attempted to withdraw money using his ATM card. As the transaction was unsuccessful, they started taking him back to the room on the two-wheeler. On the way, Hariharan, claimed to have jumped off the vehicle and escaped.
Based on a complaint lodged by Hariharan at the Mambalam Police Station crime wing, the police registered a case and took up investigation.
On investigating, the police nabbed five involved in the crime – Saravanan, 28, Saranraj, 21, and Sudhakar, 19, of Kannammapet, T. Nagar. Two juveniles involved in the case were also questioned.
From them, the police recovered a three-gram gold ring, one silver chain, one bracelet, ₹1,500 in cash, and seized one knife and a two-wheeler.
The three arrested accused were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. The two juveniles were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
