A 27-year-old man was hacked to death by a six-member gang on Thiruvalluvar Salai on Monday night.
Police identified the victim as Vignesh, a resident of Nellithope. He was a former functionary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Nellithope constituency. He was riding his bike along with his friends when the gang that came in an autorickshaw and two-wheelers waylaid Mr. Vignesh before assaulting him with lethal weapons.
A scuffle the victim had with a group during a funeral procession recently was considered to be the trigger for the fatal assault. Orleanpet police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to arrest the culprits, said an officer.
