Four, including VCK members, held for murder near Kalpakkam

The Kalpakkam police arrested four persons, including two VCK party members, for the murder of a 50-year-old man near Pettai village of Koovathur on June 29. A search is on for four more suspects.

The victim, Mohanraj, who is the owner of a petrol bunk, was returning home after work on ECR at Kathankadai near Kalpakkam when the incident took place.

The murder led to tension in the area, with traders staging a road blockade on the ECR, condemning the murder.

A special police team, formed to nab the accused, arrested VCK party members Raghu and Dakshinamoorthy and Ravindran, and Kathir.

During investigation, it was found that the murder was linked to an earlier incident, where Raghu and Dakshinamoorthy were assaulted by a farmer, Muralidharan, with whom they picked a quarrel at the petrol bunk on May 16. Subsequently, Raghu, along with a group of persons, assaulted the farmer. The video of the assault had gone viral on social media.

Following this, the police arrested Raghu and Dakshinamoorthy. Having come out on bail last week, they hatched a plan to murder Mohanraj for handing over the CCTV footage to the police and posting it on social media.

On Sunday night, an eight-member gang led by Raghu followed Mohanraj on the ECR and murdered him, the police said.
