Kolathur police arrested a gang of five for allegedly selling land to a third party by fraudulent means without the owner’s knowledge.
The police said that in 2022, Nandakumar, 44 of Periyar Nagar, was looking for a piece of land to buy. He approached Ramesh Kumar, who, claiming to be a real estate agent, had posted on social media about 1200-sq.ft. land at Poompuhar Nagar in Kolathur. When he expressed interest, Ramesh Kumar took him to another agent, Murali, who possessed the land documents. Nandakumar verified the documents and found that the title of the land was in the name of one Dileep Kumar, who in turn granted power of attorney to one Venkatesan to sell the land.
During negotiation, Venkatesan agreed to sell the property for ₹92 lakh, in the presence of a man who claimed to be Dileep Kumar. A sale deed was executed and the property registered in Nandakumar’s name at the Sub-Registrar office at Sembium in September 2022.
The following month, Nandakumar received a letter from the Sub-Registrar office informing him of the cancellation of the registration as the sellers had deployed an impersonator in Dileep Kumar’s name to execute the sale deed fraudulently using forged documents. He then lodged a complaint with the police, seeking action against the fraudsters who cheated him of ₹92 lakh.
Based on his complaint, Kolathur Police registered a case and arrested five men – Venkatesan, 54 of Thirunindravur; Kalilur Rahaman, 50 of West Ambattur; Sayid Salahuddin, 40 of Manali New Town; Abdul Razaq, 73 of Erukkanchery; and Abubucker, 51 of Kodungaiyur.
