A Nepali gangster accused of murdering a doctor in Jangpura last year was shot dead in an overnight encounter near Astha Kunj Park in south-east Delhi, the police said.
Bhim Mahabahadur Jora, a notorious criminal carrying a reward of ₹50,000, was killed in a joint operation by the Delhi police’s Special Staff and the Gurugram Crime Branch. He was accused of murdering 63-year-old general physician Yogesh Chander Paul during a robbery at his residence in May 2024. Paul ran a private clinic in Jangpura.
Acting on a tip-off about his movement in the Capital, a joint police team intercepted 39-year-old Jora, a native of Lalpur in Nepal, on Monday night. Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Sanjay Kumar Jain said when the police surrounded Jora, he opened fire instead of surrendering. “In retaliatory action, the criminal was injured in police gunfire and later died during treatment at AIIMS Trauma Centre,” Mr. Jain said, adding that a pistol and several live cartridges were recovered from his possession.
Jora had fled to Nepal after the murder and had been on the run since 2014. He is linked to multiple cases of dacoity, burglary, and murder in Gurugram, Bengaluru, Surat, and Ghaziabad. His modus operandi involved recruiting people of Nepali origin as domestic workers, gathering inside information, and then targeting homes for robbery, Mr. Jain said.
During the encounter, two bullets fired by the accused struck the bulletproof jackets of two police officers. “The officers returned fire in self-defence, shooting at Jora’s legs and injuring him,” the police officer said.
