Police have increased security at busy shopping hubs in the city.
In view of Deepavali, the 108 ambulance network will put in place precautionary measures from October 19 to 21. In Chennai region alone, about 500 ambulances are being deployed to handle emergencies arising during Deepavali, while bike ambulances will be ready to reach out to emergencies in congested and narrow areas.
The 108 ambulance service, implemented under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project and operated by EMRI Green Health Services in the State, anticipates over 6,500 emergencies during Deepavali, which is 30% higher than usual, a press release said.
It will be on 24-hour standby in coordination with the medical, police, and fire departments. The Emergency Response Centre will function at full capacity across three shifts. Deepavali hotspots have been identified and ambulances will be stationed at the locations from October 19.
Over 500 ambulances operating in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Ranipet districts have been specially stationed to handle emergency situations that may arise during the festival. All ambulances have been equipped with fire safety tools, rescue equipment, oxygen cylinders, and essential emergency medicines. Trained paramedics and pilots are on full readiness. In case of emergencies, the public can dial 108, which will automatically connect to the nearest emergency ambulance location centre for immediate response.
The vehicles will be stationed at identified hotspots. All districts have sufficient backup vehicles round-the-clock, and there will be GPS-based case assignment for quick response to the public for all emergencies. The availability of manpower to run the 108 operations has been ensured. The ambulances will be deployed in the identified festival hotspots on the eve of Deepavali. The State’s health helpline – 104 – will operate with full staff to provide medical advice if needed.
Meanwhile the Greater Chennai Police have stepped up security in busy shopping hubs including T. Nagar, Pondy Bazaar, Mylapore, Flower Bazaar, Purasawalkam and Washermenpet. Following the orders of Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun, additional security arrangements were made in T. Nagar area ahead of the Deepavali festival. and were inspected by the Additional Commissioner of Police, South N. Kannan.
