Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that the Delhi government has decided to remove the monthly family income cap for registered Kashmiri migrant families seeking financial assistance.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the monthly family income cap for receiving assistance has been ₹26,800 so far. The move is expected to allowmore families to take advantage of the benefit.
“Firstly, the income ceiling of ₹26,800 per month has been abolished. From now on, all registered Kashmiri migrant families will receive the allowance regardless of their current income. Relief is not charity, it is a rightful entitlement arising from historical displacement, and must be granted on humanitarian grounds,” the Chief Minister said.
Ms. Gupta said that a special scheme has also been launched to give migrant families a one-time chance to update the details of their family members. “Records can now be corrected without penalties or recovery of past payments, ensuring transparency and fairness,” she added.
The government will also clear all pending arrears till September without any further delay, Ms. Gupta said.
At present, around 1,800 registered Kashmiri migrants, mostly Hindus, reside in the Capital. According to the rules, a maximum of four members of a registered family are eligible for financial support, with each receiving ₹3,250 per month, totalling ₹13,000 per family.
“This decision will not only make the relief distribution process more efficient but also bring it in line with the provisions already in place in Jammu and Kashmir. Most importantly, it recognises the immense suffering of the displaced community and offers a humane balm to wounds that have remained unhealed for decades,” added Ms. Gupta.
