The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, in association with District Institution of Education and Training (DIET) of the Education Department of Karnataka, has begun training government teachers in the use of Artificial Intelligence tools for better learning outcomes.

The DIET conducted a five-day training programme for headmasters of 650 government primary and high schools at the St. Joseph Engineering College in Mangaluru from December 8 to December 12.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive of Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbhari told The Hindu that there are enough AI tools to help teachers to effectively teach students and develop interest in academics. There are tools to make a good presentation about a topic. The AI tools help in solving complex problems in science and mathematics. Teachers can use tools to train students for engineering, medical and civil services examinations. Teachers need to be made aware of these tools, which can be passed on to children. The initiative by the Zilla Panchayat to train teachers in AI is part of the regular teachers’ training programme.
To start with, headmasters attended a training session where in experts gave a presentation on about 20 AI tools that help in content creation, presentation and evaluation.
Subrahmanya Adiga from DIET said experts were called to make teachers aware of AI tools that can be used to make a presentation effective by use of slides and videos. The tools that help in preparing question paper were also shown.

DIET Principal Sadananda Poonja said the headmasters will now hold sessions with teachers and make them use the AI tools in teaching.
K.V. Rao, Director of Regional Science Centre at Pilikula, said the Centre co-ordinated with DIET and St. Joseph College in devising the AI training programme. In addition to providing resources for the training, the college provided assistance of computer students, who helped trainees in the operation of computer systems and tools. Mr. Rao said he held sessions with headmasters to motivate them to use AI tools, which has lot of potential in knowledge dissemination.
Mr. Karbhari said he intends to hold a separate meeting with teachers in English, Science, Mathematics and Social Science to deliberate on the use of AI tools for effective preparation of class 10 students for SSLC and other school-level competitive examinations.
