Leading healthcare institutions in the city raised awareness about the significance of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and developing the life-saving skill at the community-level during the recent ‘CPR Awareness Week’ observance.

Joining the nation-wide campaign called by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Department of Emergency Medicine and Trauma Care at Jipmer, hosted various events on this year’s theme of ‘Every Minute with CPR = Higher Chances of Survival.’

The programmes sought to raise awareness about the significance of knowing rudimentary Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and developing the life-saving skill at the community-level. The focus was on helping participants understand the importance of CPR and the key steps in emergency response, and how to correctly perform compression-only CPR, which is a vital skill that can significantly increase survival rates during cardiac emergencies, Jipmer said in a press note.

A public demonstration and hands-on training session on CPR was organised for the general public, patient attenders, teachers, homemakers, farmers, students, and Jipmer staff. Several training stalls were set up at key locations across the Jipmer campus to ensure wide participation and accessibility.

Jipmer Nursing College also organised various activities for the CPR awareness week in which about 250 nursing college students took the CPR pledge. A quiz contest on CPR was also conducted for the undergraduate nursing students.

As a Regional Nodal Centre for Disaster Preparedness, Jipmer has been actively engaged in strengthening the community’s resilience by enhancing skills and knowledge to face unforeseen emergencies and natural calamities through training programmes to empower the general public to deal with crises.

Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, a constituent unit of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), Puducherry, too organised events focused on ‘a Compression-only CPR drive’ for engineering students.

The awareness session for the students of Rajiv Gandhi Engineering College, Kirumampakkam, aimed to create awareness about the importance of timely CPR and its role in saving lives during cardiac emergencies.

Around 60 students participated in the programme, which included a lecture, hands-on training, live demonstrations and practical exercises. The highlight, included segments on early recognition of cardiac arrest and the critical role of timely CPR in improving survival outcomes.

The students also took the CPR pledge.

The events were led by Nihar Ranjan Biswas, SBV Vice-Chancellor, Nirmal Coumare, Director of Health, Hospital, Health and Outreach Services, Swati Jayant Pawar, Deputy Medical Superintendent and Antony John Charles S, Head of Emergency Medicine, a press note said.
