Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao on Tuesday directed the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) to complete the construction of the new traffic loop at Hebbal within 15 days and open it for public use.

During an inspection of several areas under the North Corporation limits, Mr. Rao said the BDA had already finished work on the new flyover loop bringing traffic from K.R. Puram and opened it to commuters. The loop that will connect this new structure to the existing Hebbal flyover is now under construction. Officials briefed the GBA Chief that the first girder had been installed and concrete work is under way. Mr. Rao instructed the team to install the remaining two girders at the earliest and finish all pending works on priority.

Mr. Rao pointed out that the footpath along Hebbal lake was damaged in many stretches and instructed officials to repair it and ensure it remains pedestrian-friendly.

One carriageway of the Hebbal flyover has already been milled and re-asphalted, with the Commissioner directing officials to mill the remaining stretch and complete its asphalting without delay. He also inspected asphalting work across RMV 2nd stage and Basaveshwara Layout, particularly the roads connecting arterial and sub-arterial networks.

Reviewing the ongoing works at Nagawara junction, Mr. Rao was informed that BWSSB needs to lay a 600 to 700-mm sanitary pipeline for 1 km from Ibis Hotel to the Nagawara rajakaluve (storm-water drain). The North Traffic Division has granted permission, while approval from the Eastern Traffic Division is pending. BWSSB said it would begin the work from the northern side.

BDA’s proposed new flyover

To allow vehicles coming from the Outer Ring Road–K.R. Puram side (Manyata Tech Park Road) to merge directly onto Ballari Road near Esteem Mall without entering the Hebbal junction, the BDA has proposed a 1.4-km flyover.

Officials said discussions with various departments are under way, and steps will be taken to implement the project at the earliest.

This proposal comes against the backdrop of the State government’s larger decongestion plan for the Hebbal corridor. Earlier this August, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had announced a 1.5-km tunnel between Nagawara and the University of Agricultural Sciences (GKVK) while inspecting the new Hebbal flyover loop. At the time, he had said the tunnel and the loop were part of a series of short tunnel roads and flyovers aimed at easing traffic from all approaches to the junction.
