How indie singer Dikshant turned wedding emotions into a song

Indie singer-songwriter Dikshant was casually browsing wedding videos on social media when a thought struck him: could a song reshape the narrative around marriage? “A bride leaves her parents’ home to build a life with new people in a different household. We rarely acknowledge what she gives up in that transition,” he says, explaining the inspiration behind Saajan, his new wedding song written from the groom’s perspective.

In Saajan, the groom addresses the bride not with “my home” but “our home”, emphasising togetherness and shared commitment. The song acknowledges the bride’s emotions and the profound shift that comes with marriage.

For the Mumbai-based singer, music has always been a way to foster empathy. He grew up in a chawl in Colaba, where music formed an integral part of daily life. “In a chawl, music isn’t just for festivals or special occasions. People use it to express emotions,” he says.

From singing at banjo parties, birthdays and anniversaries to community celebrations during Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri, Dikshant absorbed a wide range of cultural influences. “The community spirit was strong — not just during festivals, but in moments of joy and hardship,” he recalls.

He began writing songs as a teenager and soon decided to pursue music seriously. A commerce graduate, he chose colleges that encouraged cultural activities, hoping they would help him gain a foothold in the industry.

Over six years, Dikshant has released 15 original songs, including popular tracks such as Tum Aankhon Se Batana and Muskan. His music, marked by simple and relatable lyrics, has built a loyal listener base through heartfelt storytelling and melodic depth.

Much of his empathy, he says, comes from his mother and his childhood experiences. “We have moved out of the chawl now, but watching people navigate life there was humbling. I try to observe those emotions and reflect them in my songs.”

As he prepares for a five-city tour in April, Dikshant is also working on his next single, inspired by two qualities he believes enrich life: empathy and gratitude.
