Inmates from Nigeria, Uganda, and Sudan created a ruckus and broke open a gate at the Special Camp in Tiruchi Central Prison on Tuesday, demanding their immediate release and repatriation.
According to sources, the Special Camp housed about<SU>170 inmates from various countries, facing various charges. who faced various charges. Of them, those from Nigeria, Uganda, and Sudan went berserk demanding their release. Two women from Uganda, began banging a gate with various objects, at 7.30 p.m. to attract the authorities’ attention.
On being alerted, Revenue and police personnel went to the spot and tried to pacify them. However, they intensified their protest, supported by men from Nigeria and Sudan. They used various objects, including iron rods and stones, to damage the gate.
When the situation worsened, Collector V. Saravanan and Commissioner of Police N. Kamini went to the spot and held negotiations with them. However, they refused to budge, and even prevented attempts to repair the damaged gate. At one point, the inmates managed to break open the 15-foot-high and 10-foot-wide gate. The protest continued throughout the night, sources said.
Acting on a complaint by the Deputy Collector of the Special Camp, the police registered a case and arrested 11 persons. Most of them were Nigerians. After a medical check-up at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, they were produced before a court and remanded.
Mr. Saravanan said action would be taken.
