In 2024, Savannah Guthrie shared a glimpse into how close she is to her sister Annie Guthrie.

“We know each other’s thoughts and ways. We know each other’s sadness and weakness. We know each other’s tickle spots and pain points,” Savannah wrote in her book Mostly What Goes Does. “Sometimes, the way we have found each other in the hard times is God, the sixth member of our family, as my sister so memorably put it. I know when she is praying for me, and I believe she knows when I am praying for her too.”

How the Death of Savannah and Annie Guthrie’s Dad Brought Them Closer Together

After Charles Guthrie died in 1988, his daughter Savannah Guthrie recalled memories of feeling supported by Annie Guthrie.

“Our whole family just hung onto each other for dear life because it was such a shock,” she shared on Today in 2017. “We were just trying to figure out how to become a family of four, when we had always been a family of five.”

Although the sisters headed to college after their dad’s death, they made a pact to not make their mom feel alone.

“We both decided to live at home. And we had a spoken or unspoken pact that on the weekends, even though we were college girls, one of us would always stay home on one of the weekend nights so that my mom wouldn’t be alone,” Savannah recalled. “That was just something we did together as sisters.”

Before she starts work at the Today show, Savannah Guthrie tries her best to prioritize prayer time. At the top of mind are her siblings and immediate family.

“Some mornings, I pray names, just names, just like [Mister Rogers] did. I whisper my husband’s name to God and picture his image. Mike. Then my kids. Vale. Charley. I imagine them one by one, summoning their sweet faces,” Savannah wrote in her book. “Mom, Annie, Cam. I see them in my mind. This prayer experience is surprisingly powerful; it bonds us deeply to the ones whose names we utter, softening any edges. Praying their names feels like an act of love, an act of meaning, and act of hope. Lifting up the people I love before the God I trust draws me closer to him and to them.”

Savannah and Annie Guthrie Are Both Writers

While Savannah Guthrie has written a collection of children’s books and a spirituality book about her faith, Annie Guthrie has written poetry and published her own body of work in 2015 titled The Good Dark.

“Annie was always writing, always so interesting and deep and thoughtful,” Savannah told People at the time. “In college, we would take some of the same classes – like a humanities course – and Annie would read the same book twice because she was so interested and devoted, and I would barely read it at all.”
