With the Indian Super League adopting a condensed, single-leg round robin format this season, matches seemingly come thick and fast.
Within a blink of an eye, one-third of the campaign is over, and when Bengaluru FC welcomes Mohun Bagan Super Giant to the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, it will be the beginning of the crucial middle phase.
The Kolkata powerhouse is flying high, winning all four of its matches to go top of the table and scoring 14 goals in the process. But all of those victories were at home and the travel down south will be its first outstation trip.
There are also concerns over the fitness of attacker Robson Robinho, and Bagan’s most recent memory of being in the Garden City is the 0-3 loss in September 2024.
But the club has an overwhelmingly positive head-to-head record, having won 10 contests to BFC’s two, including 2024-25 final last April.
BFC, meanwhile, has been middling at best. It lies sixth, with two victories, a draw and a loss. The most recent fixture, however, was a 2-1 win over Mohammedan Sporting Club.
“We have to take every match as it comes,” said BFC coach Renedy Singh. “It’s a big match, and everyone is aware of it. The defeat against Punjab was not easy, and the game away at Mohammedan was also a little difficult.
“This truncated season has been difficult. We’ve all got limited matches, and we are concerned about staying fit. Right now, we are going to be taking positives from our games, and I want my boys to fight till the last minute.”
