A fresh spell of wet weather on Tuesday (September 2, 2025) saw several rivers and streams swell again in the Jammu division. Schools and the Jammu-Srinagar national highway continued to remain shut due to fresh threats of landslips and flash flooding.

Officials said the intermittent rains saw the Tawi river flowing above the danger mark in Udhampur and Jammu city. The Basanter river in Samba also crossed the flood alert level by more than four feet during the day.

Schools in the Jammu division will remain closed on September 3. “In view of the weather advisory regarding the possibility of heavy rainfall, landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, etc., all government and private schools across the Jammu Division shall remain closed on September 03, 2025,” a government order said.

Officials in many districts in the Jammu division have put their staff on high alert. Shafqat Majeed Bhat, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mahore, said there were reports of damage to roads, houses, crops, property and public infrastructure. “The field staff of all departments shall remain stationed at their duty locations and actively address public grievances as per rules,” he said.

Locals said many inter-district roads were closed in Poonch, Reasi, Ramban, and Doda due to fresh landslips. The Army set up a 110-foot Bailey bridge over the Jangalwar stream, to provide connectivity to Doda and Kishtwar districts.

“Devastating floods in the Jammu region have submerged vast areas, sweeping away homes, bridges and fields. NH-244, the lifeline to Doda and Kishtwar, was washed away near Thatri, crippling mobility and cutting off villages,” the Jammu-based White Knight Corps unit of the Army said in a post on X.

However, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed to traffic due to weather advisories and recent landslips. It has adversely affected the apple-laden trucks heading outside the Kashmir valley.

Nazir Ahmad, an apple dealer at Sopore mandi, said over 500 trucks carrying apple produce were stranded on the highway for several days. The Kashmir valley is connected with the outside world through the alternative Mughal road in south Kashmir. Most of the essential supplies like petrol and eatables are being ferried into the valley from this stretch.

The People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti appealed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to introduce a dedicated train service between Kashmir and Delhi to address the challenges faced by fruit growers in the valley. “Unfortunately, the road has once again been closed, leaving hundreds of fruit-laden vehicles stranded, resulting in inevitable losses. A dedicated train service would bring much-needed relief to everyone involved in the trade,” she said.

BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma announced that 28 BJP MLAs will donate ₹1 crore each from their Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to support families affected by the recent floods in Jammu.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department forecast wet weather for the next 24 hours in J&K. It warned of the possibility of “heavy to very heavy rain” at few districts of the Jammu division till the evening of September 3.
