The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is expected to hold its students’ union elections in November, in accordance with the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, an official said on Saturday.
The guidelines, which regulate student union elections, require universities to conduct polls six to eight weeks after the start of the academic session.
The 2025-26 academic session at JNU began on September 12 with PhD admissions. The university has not yet announced the schedule for the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections. However, on Friday, it notified the formation of a grievance redressal cell for the conduction of the polls.
“The committee has a mandate for the redressal of election-related grievances, including, but not limited to, breaches of the code of conduct of elections and complaints relating to election-related expenditure,” read a notification from the Dean of Students.
The JNUSU polls were last conducted in April this year following a long delay, as the Delhi High Court was approached to address certain issues related to the guidelines and disruption in the university’s academic cycle due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the incumbent JNUSU will be serving for less than one year.
Currently, the Left Unity panel, an alliance between the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), is ruling the JNUSU by winning three posts on the central panel. One post went to the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) after a 10-year gap.
