Candidates on Monday filed their nomination papers for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections scheduled for November 4.
During the election held earlier this year, the United Left had split into two blocs. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) formed a Left-Ambedkarite panel with the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association, the All India Students’ Federation, and the Progressive Students’ Association. The All India Students’ Union (AISA) allied with the Democratic Students’ Federation to form the Left Unity panel.
The outgoing panel includes three office-bearers from the Left Unity panel, and one from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Differences between the AISA and the SFI had reportedly caused a rift, leading to the split.
The members of the two groups said they are now coming together with the aim of “preventing ABVP from entering the union”. “We see imposition of RSS-ABVP ideology in universities across the country. This is a call for students to vote for a stronger union from which ABVP will be left out,” said Aishe Ghosh, SFI Delhi secretary and former JNUSU president
While SFI and AISA have confirmed the alliance, of which DSF is also a part, details are yet to be announced.
The papers will be scrutinised, and the list of valid nominations would be displayed on Tuesday. Withdrawals would take place on Wednesday and the final list would be announced at 2 p.m. The results are to be announced on November 6.
