The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union protested on Tuesday outside the university’s Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Central Library, demanding access to academic journals as scholars are “facing difficulties in conducting their research”.
“Since April this year, students have had no access to academic journals or digital libraries such as JSTOR. We now follow the One Nation, One Subscription (ONOS) policy under which students get access to all journals. But several journals are not part of ONOS, and this is impacting scholars,” said JNUSU president Nitish Kumar.
The ONOS, envisioned under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, comprises 30 international journal publishers. It aims to provide unified access to international scholarly e-journals and database subscriptions for all government higher education institutions.
Several students said they have previously written to the administration regarding access to journals, as it is unaffordable to subscribe to them independently. The students also said that prior to April, they had access to JSTOR, which contains over 10 million articles.
