The State government has deepened its international scientific engagement with ETH Zurich — one of the world’s leading institutions in quantum science and technology — through a visit to the ETH Quantum Center and an invitation for its leadership to participate in the Quantum India Summit 2026 in Bengaluru.
During his visit, N.S. Boseraju, Minister for Science and Technology and Minor Irrigation, met Andreas Wallraff, Jonathan Home, and Klaus Ensslin, directors of the ETH Quantum Center.
The professors have been pioneering research in superconducting qubits and trapped ion systems for over two decades, according to a release from the Minister’s office.
The Minister extended a personal invitation to Prof. Wallraff, widely regarded as a global trailblazer in quantum computing, to attend and contribute to the next edition of Quantum India Bengaluru.
“ETH Zurich stands among the birthplaces of modern quantum computing — where the world’s foundational research in quantum science evolved into real, working technology. It is a privilege to connect Karnataka’s emerging quantum ecosystem with such world-class expertise,” said Mr. Boseraju.
The Karnataka delegation toured the superconducting qubit labs and trapped ion labs, gaining insights into how the ETH Quantum Center coordinates research across Switzerland through a collaborative model. The Minister noted that Karnataka will draw inspiration from ETH’s approach to anchor a similar structure in Bengaluru under the Q-City initiative, enabling joint research and innovation across institutions in Karnataka and India.
The ETH team also demonstrated how technologies from these labs have successfully evolved into thriving quantum start-ups. The delegation visited Zurich Instruments, a spin-off from ETH Zurich that manufactures precision amplifiers and signal systems for quantum computers across the world, including India.
The Minister stated that: “The Q-City Bengaluru will establish comparable infrastructure to nurture quantum hardware development and support global-scale start-ups emerging from Karnataka’s growing innovation ecosystem”.
