
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visits the site of the TVK rally in Karur, where a stampede claimed 41 lives

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan on Monday (September 29, 2025) visited Velusamypuram in Karur where 41 people lost their lives in a stampede during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay’s rally on Saturday (September 27) night.
Arriving around 11.10 a.m., the Ministers inspected the location where footwear and other belongings of participants were still scattered. They later visited the Karur Government Medical College Hospital to enquire about the condition of those undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.
Subsequently, Ms. Sitharaman and Mr. Murugan went to Emoor Puthur village, where five residents had died in the stampede, to offer condolences to the bereaved families.
