The CB-CID police has arrested one more person in the murder case of Scheduled Caste software engineer Kavin Selvaganesh in a caste killing incident reported in Tirunelveli on July 27.
The arrested person has been identified as K. Jayapaul, 27, cousin of prime accused S. Surjith.
Even as Surjith, and his father Saravanan, a suspended Sub-Inspector, were being grilled by the investigators since Monday evening , the CB-CID police arrested Jayapaul of Savalaperi near Palayamkottai on Wednesday evening based on the ongoing interrogation.
After taking Surjith to the scene of crime on Tuesday evening, the investigators recorded the statements of father and son.
“Since the investigators believed that at least one or two persons might have helped Surjith in murdering Kavin or after the murder. The information they could extract from the two accused during the past two days gave a vital lead that led to the arrest of Jayapaul, in whose house Surjith had left the machete he had used for the murder and changed his blood-stained clothes,” sources in the CB-CID said.
The investigators, who allegedly recovered the machete from the house of Jayapaul, arrested him for reportedly helping his cousin to hide the weapon in his house and burning the blood-staind clothes of Surjith after the murder.
Meanwhile, the CB-CID produced Surjith and Saravanan before Judicial Magistrate Hema of Additional Sessions Court for SC / ST Cases on Wednesday evening after the end of their custody for questioning and they were remanded in judicial custody till August 26.
Saravanan told the Judicial Magistrate that the police threatened him to sign in a statement they had produced, and “Hence, I refused to put my signature in the statement.”
Jayapaul was produced in court and remanded in judicial custody till August 26.
