Kimberly Williams-Paisley remembers late Father of the Bride costar Diane Keaton’s motherly advice when they worked together on the 1991 film and the 1995 sequel.
“I remember I had a lot of anxiety during those two movies,” Williams-Paisley, 54, said during the Friday, October 24, episode of iHeart’s “Call It What It Is” podcast. “I mean, I was 19 on the first one. It was the first major role I had, and Diane was like a mother figure to me who was very safe.”
“I talked to her about my anxiety. I had a lot of dreams,” she continued. “I’m a big dreamer, literally a big dreamer, but I would have, like, weird nightmares and weird [things], and I think it was, like, me working out my anxiety in the middle of the night, and she would analyze dreams with me.”
Williams-Paisley said she thinks anxiety was something that Keaton “probably dealt with too,” saying the actress “didn’t have easy answers” to her questions. “I think she had people she trusted that she talked to about it.”

Keaton died on October 11 at age 79. Her death certificate listed primary bacterial pneumonia as her cause of death with no underlying causes. Williams-Paisley said that she initially saw a notification on her phone with Keaton’s name early on that day but just assumed it was about “another movie” or “another thing” Keaton was working on. It wasn’t until “later in the day” that she was on social media and saw tributes to her former costar.
Williams-Paisley then shared her own tribute to Keaton via Instagram.
“Diane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life. You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter. 🙏🏻🕊️💔❤️❤️❤️,” she captioned the October 11 post.
The Farmer Wants a Wife host said on the podcast that Keaton was a “big part” of her life.
“She was just so generous and so funny and wise, just wonderful, and especially on
the second film, I felt like we really bonded and, you know, just laughed,” Williams-Paisley said. “Like, the humor clicked, and it was so fun to be on set when she was on set.”

She also recalled fond memories with Keaton, including when they visited a swap meet together while filming Father of the Bride Part II.
“She said, ‘I’m going to the swap meet this weekend. You want to go?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah,’ and I’m not, as I’d never been, a swap meet person,” said Williams-Paisley. “I didn’t know how to do it. She knew that, and she showed up, and it was like a hot day, and she showed up in her full Diane Keaton [look], you know, her hat, her hat and her necktie. She might have even had gloves.”
Keaton then opened the trunk of her car to retrieve a shopping cart and gave Williams-Paisley $5.
“She’s like, ‘Go buy something. And I’m going to go buy something too.’ And we went with her sister. I’m pretty sure it was her sister, and she went off shopping and I went off, and I was like, ‘What am I supposed to buy? How am I supposed to know? Like, what would Diane Keaton think is cool?’” Williams-Paisley recalled. “And I think I remember buying, like, a plastic flower. I don’t know, what could I find for $5? We met back up around, like, 20 minutes later, and her cart was full of stuff. She had a clown painting. I just never would have picked [that] out, but she found treasures. I just thought it was so fun.”
