Demanding a government job to one of the family members of the three persons who died in a road accident caused by a police vehicle in Sivaganga district on Tuesday (November 11) night, the relatives of the victims staged a protest along Madurai – Tiruchi National Highway near Y. Othakadai junction here on Friday.

The death of the three members of a family — Prasad, 25, a resident of Chittampatti near Melur, his wife Sathya, 20, and two-year-old son Ashwin — on the night shocked the villagers.

As the protest which started on Tuesday night as refusal to accept the body of the three victims spilled onto Wednesday, the relatives blocked the road adjacent to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai seeking compensation, a government job to the family and legal action against the allegedly inebriated police personnel who caused the accident.

though Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a solatium of ₹3 lakh each for the deceased family members and ₹1 lakh for the injured woman, Soneswari, the relatives persisted with their protest.

The protest, which prolonged till Friday, blew up into the agitation to block the NH.

As members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi joined with the protesters on Friday, Nagarathinam, an advocate representing the family, said they were contacted over phone by VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan, who requested them to call off the protest.

“He assured us that he would speak to the Chief Minister regarding granting a government job to a family member of the victims. Since he insisted on ending the protest, we listened to him and withdrew the stir,” he added.

Following that, he said, they accepted the bodies of three deceased from the GRH.
