Delhi Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena has approved the grant of honorary ranks, one level above the existing, to Delhi Police personnel on the day of their superannuation, benefitting at least 88,000 employees, an official said on Friday.

However, the grant of an honorary rank will not constitute pensionary benefits, the official said.

“Delhi Police personnel in non-gazetted ranks, completing two years in their present rank, having a good annual performance appraisal report and not awarded major punishment during their service, will be eligible for such honorary ranks,” said the official.

Likewise, an honorary rank of Head Constable will be awarded to Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector to Head Constable, Sub Inspector to Assistant Sub-Inspector and Inspector to Sub-Inspector.

In May, the Ministry of Home Affairs granted honorary ranks to personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces and the Assam Rifles, from the rank of Constable to Sub-Inspector, on the day of their superannuation, without financial or pensionary benefits. Subsequently, Delhi Police moved a similar proposal for approval of the Lieutenant-Governor, the official said.

The honorary rank to retiring personnel offers formal recognition of long and dedicated service, enhances morale and promotes respect, the official added.
