The long-awaited sequel to Michael Mann’s Heat is finally gaining momentum, and some serious star power. United Artists, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, is now in final negotiations to take over Heat 2, with Mann returning to write and direct the follow-up to his 1995 classic.
Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio, Austin Butler, Adam Driver, and Bradley Cooper are all reportedly circling roles in the film, though no official casting deals have been confirmed. According to insiders, “everyone you can think of has met on this,” making Heat 2 one of the most coveted projects in development.
Based on Mann’s 2022 novel co-written with Meg Gardiner, Heat 2 serves as both a prequel and a sequel, unfolding across multiple timelines. The story revisits younger versions of the original characters — including career criminal Neil McCauley (played by Robert De Niro in the original) and detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) — while also exploring the aftermath of the climactic events of Heat. The novel’s narrative follows Chris Shiherlis, originally portrayed by Val Kilmer, in the years after the Los Angeles heist gone wrong. DiCaprio is reportedly being eyed to take over that role.
The project had previously been in development at Warner Bros. before budget disputes led Mann to shop it elsewhere. United Artists ultimately emerged as the frontrunner, with veteran producers Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt now attached alongside Mann.
The original Heat became a landmark in crime cinema, pairing Pacino and De Niro on screen for the first time and setting a benchmark for heist thrillers. With Mann at the helm once again and a new generation of A-list talent circling, Heat 2 could reignite that same fire — nearly 30 years later.
